World Narcissistic Abuse Awareness Day: 10 Truths We Need to Talk About

June 1 is World Narcissistic Abuse Awareness Day — but awareness alone is not enough.

The conversation around narcissistic abuse has changed dramatically over the last decade: gaslighting, trauma bonding, future faking, love bombing — these terms are now part of everyday language. But beneath the buzzwords is a much deeper reality people are still struggling to understand.

Why are emotionally unsafe relationships so normalized? Why do survivors end up doubting themselves? Why do systems, institutions, and even mental health professionals so often miss what is happening in plain sight?

As society becomes more trauma-informed, another uncomfortable truth is becoming harder to ignore: emotional violence leaves lasting psychological, relational, and even physical consequences.

The focus is finally beginning to shift away from trying to understand narcissists — and toward understanding what happens to the people living through these relationships.

    • @birtsmomtoo says:

A BOOK?!?! I’m there. Thank Dr Ramani. I found you after being pulled out of a horrible marriage. Listening to you I learn 1) it’s not me 2) I can recover. Thank you!!!

  • @DennisLucas-l4s says:

I am definitely more aware thanks to you.

  • @annbetz1 says:

A couple of years ago I sat next to someone at a networking event and she asked me what I was currently working on. When I told her I was working with people recovering from narcissistic abuse, she said “Oh, don’t you think that word is way overused these days?” I said “No, I think it is way UNDERUSED, to be honest. Especially with older generations. We don’t want to acknowledge the commonality of toxic personalities in our world.” She wasn’t interested in talking to me further.

    • @sandrasevenstarsenterprise6909 says:

      Ha. Probably a narcissist lol

    • @SherryTomlinson-r2y says:

or a conscious or unconscious enabler

    • @goodgracious6364 says:

Exactly! I remember pointing out that a male character in a popular movie was a typical narcissist and was told that I didn’t know what I was talking about…when in fact the character showed every core behavior of a narcissist: constantly blamed his problems on everybody else, cheated on his devoted wife, down played his young son’s accomplishments, rewrote every narrative to make himself the victim, and expected his wife to take care of his and his mistresses infant child.

    • @PinkiePi says:

Look at the malignant narcissist pedophile fascist running the US. Look at every major celebrity and CEO. Look at these social media influencers.
We are run by narcissists and elevate narcissists on a societal level. It is fully horrifying.

  • @daily_children_stories says:

Thank you Dr Ramani for faithfully operating this channel to educate people about narcissism and narcissistic personality. I would not have known i was in one if not for this channel. Still going through a tough divorce and revisiting the past is difficult, but knowing that i am not going through this alone helps make it a little more bearable

  • @julieb3432 says:

Excellent list. When I first learned about narcissistic abuse, I was in my forties. I wish I’d learned about this before I started high school. I would have made very different choices if I was educated about narc abuse back then.

    • @marysisak2359 says:

You and me both. I knew something was wrong and sought help for 50 years. People kept trying to fix me. Kind of like trying to teach someone to deal with periodically getting tasered. Come on, they would say. It’s not that bad.

    • @OverUnderwhelmed says:

I was amongst those that thought it was just far rarer but it’s not unfortunately.

    • @WiredPigeon says:

for children with narcissists in the family, it sets them up for a lifetime of being targeted. terrible to deal with.

  • @marysisak2359 says:

You will always be the guru of narcissistic abuse to me.

  • @JqueenAr says:

It is a silent epidemic. People are suffering everywhere and these demons are enjoying their pain.

  • @KaekoickArizona says:

The month of June is PTSD awareness month!!! Thank you for calling this day to my attention!!! I was on the national calendar last night and this day did not pull up. It is also national say something kind day. I think the best way to celebrate all three of these days/month is to say something kind to a stranger.💜💜💜💜💜💜💜 On my way to purchase purple balloons and ribbons for this day

  • @codycodes2 says:

How ironic. I found this channel bc of the nightmare I have been in my entire life particularly with a specific individual that has a birthday on this very day.
    How ironic.

  • @letstalkaboutitangel says:

Thank you for having our backs Dr. Ramani ❤

  • @BrookeAkasha says:

Number 6!!!! Please, number 6! Education in middle school! So important to have the words and knowledge that you are not alone. To understand how people work, including yourself, before you get manipulated or made to normalize a lack of safety, care, and comfort. ❤

  • @3catsinMexico says:

Thank you so much for your dedication to this work. You got me through the end of an 18 year marriage stronger, healthier, and far more discerning. ❤

  • @WendyDrayke says:

I turned 57 Saturday and I really wish this information had been available when I was much younger. My life would have been very different.

  • @MichellePlaskoff-u7v says:

This message was right on time …Wishing everyone a narc free summer ☀️ 💛

  • @MarleyLeMar says:

If something seems too good to be true, you will find out the other side of that coin is something horrific you couldn’t have imagined.

  • @ithinkthat says:

Part of the problem is that narcissists are exceptionally skilled at convincing others that their victim is the narcissist and because narcissism is not well understood, the kindest people who are usually the narcissist’s victims are often the ones being shunned, shamed and accused while the narcissist sits back marveling at his/her work having successfully revictimized their prey.

  • @GinaTBPL says:

I love that you brought up teaching kids about this kind of behavior! I have been talking to others about how people are never really trained on relationships. We just jump into them and learn by trial. Young people should be taught about relationships and what is healthy and what isn’t. At least give them the information so they aren’t blindsided by a sudden change in someone they think they love!

  • @ltzgs7145 says:

I feel this video with my whole heart

  • @ehuiosei-mensah84 says:

Emotion coming up today. Tears coming up like a pressure cooker while listening to this video.
