I think at the end of the day you just have to go with what feels the right way for you personally to interact with another individual. You just can never know all of their back story affecting x, y, z. My favourite quote you gave was “you can never say the wrong thing to the right person” and that includes what you tell yourself. No feelings are ever “wrong”
