There is a difference between values and interests. Values are things like honesty, kindness, courage, empathy… Interests are things like sports, art, travel… What I have come to understand is if I align with someone else on interests, but our values are radically different, eventually that relationship won’t work. So for instance, if I have a friend I love to go bowling with, but I learn she is cruel, forget about it. My value of kindness is much more important than my interest in bowling. Conversely, if I have a kind friend whose interests are different than mine, I can still be friends with her. It’s really fun to have common values and interests, what is even more fun is to have common values and interests AND a few different interests. The person asking the question who is looking for someone who thinks like her might want to consider if she’s looking for common values, interests, or both.

To expand a little… I think sometimes when potential romantic partners meet up and find their interests are aligned, they think that is some kind of sign that they are meant to be together. A favorite song, meal, or destination can be extremely exciting to share! But in the end, who are they when it comes to values? That’s what will really count.
