The #1 Predictor of Divorce Is Surprising
What predicts divorce vs. long-term stability?
John Gottman (and rigorous follow-up work with his colleague Robert W. Levenson) studied hundreds of couples for decades in “Love Lab” experiments.
Their research suggests that certain behaviors (criticism, contempt, defensiveness, stonewalling — the so-called “Four Horsemen”) are strong predictors of divorce or marriage breakdown.
They found that stable and happy marriages tend to have high levels of “positive affect” even during conflict or stress.
Conversely, patterns like contempt, dismissiveness, or failure to allow a partner influence are predictive of instability.
