The Strongest Predictor of Divorce

When researchers look at divorce rates within religions, a few patterns emerge.

1. Religious commitment tends to lower divorce risk

People who actively practice their religion (regular attendance, strong belief) divorce less often.

Example:
Weekly church-attending Catholics who had ever married had a 28% divorce history, compared with 38% among less frequent attendees.

So practice matters more than label.

2. The biggest predictor is religiosity, not denomination

Across many studies: Higher religious involvement → lower divorce probability

Reasons researchers suggest:

stronger norms against divorce

community pressure

counseling and support networks

marrying people with similar values

If you zoom out, the research suggests:

Religious identity alone doesn’t predict divorce.

But these things do:

Shared values

Strong community support

Commitment to marriage norms

Practicing faith together

Those factors are more common among highly religious couples, which is why religion often correlates with slightly lower divorce rates.
