Recent example I screwed up. Got into a casual conversation over a closed subway exit with a sweet young thing (I was 20-30 years older than her). I let her on the escalator ahead of me, and to my mild surprise, she turned to face me while talking. Part of my brain picked up on this, but part didn’t. I was distracted by personal issues and not being my usual confident self, so at the top of the escalator I said, “Well, have a good one.” At that moment, part of my brain could hear the slight disappointment in her voice, but it still didn’t sink in, and 45 seconds later I suddenly stopped and did a forehead smack and turned around, but she was gone.
Yup. The moral of the story, I think, is “Always be a reckless optimist no matter what, because there’s nothing to lose.” 🙂
