Narcissistic cruelty can take many forms, and some of the most damaging are also the hardest to recognize. Dr. Ramani breaks down three particularly cruel patterns in narcissistic relationships, why they happen, and the psychological toll they can take.

Cruelty is essential for them to protect themselves from deep seated shame and maintain control over others.
That doesn’t sound like a disorder to me! Who came up with NPD?! 😁 Dr. Ramani is more than right!
The “deep seated shame ” has now been debunked by new psycological research. Check out Dr Peter Salerno.
this made me cry for past me
Thank you Dr. Ramani. She constantly brings up childhood grievances, making me feel irredeemable and like nothing I do is ever right. Even though we no longer live together, I still fear her disapproval, hide my opinions, and question my decisions. Being made to feel like a terrible person has deeply affected my self-worth, to the point where I wish I had never been born. I feel this way every day.
@StjärnMossa Thank you. I know you’re right. It’s just hard when it’s someone you love and have known your whole life. Even when I try not to let her words affect me, they still do. I’m trying to get to a place where they don’t hurt as much.
@JennyBMoonseek help maybe ?
@StjärnMossaI’m currently in therapy.
I don’t understand how someone wants to live as a narcissist? they clearly knows their behavior is wrong but do it anyway. Why would people choose that kind of a lifestyle
They might not care if they even know their behaviour is wrong. They just take advantage/control/abuse the people who do as they want. So you gotta stop…Gotta stop doing what they want.
They BELIEVE they are ENTITLED.
They didn’t choose it. They lost their souls on an altar very early when they accepted the false self as god. They see themselves as god and who are you to ask questions. They simply feel nothing for you, their literal excitement is more important than your safety. They will put you in dangerous situations just to get some adrenaline.
I think the reason is superficial as they are. Those malicious strategies works, and they get what they want.
Choose? Does a clock choose to be a clock? It’s not a choice, just as I didn’t choose to be an empath, it just is…now I know more about the personality that has developed in me and thanks to Dr. Ramani I know even more about myself in relation to narcissistic people.
It’s helpful but harmful when raised by narcissistic ppl…. And it took a vry long time for me to understand I was not the problem, but once I finally learned that, I can now sense a narcissist w the most quickness… Can’t always avoid them, it’s best to learn quick that you will not be changing any of them 🙏
Yes! You’re not allowed to wear those exercise leggings, turning my phone service off, and threatening to break my phone.
The most insidious part of covert narcissistic punishment is that it leaves no visible bruises—only a dysregulated nervous system and chronic self-doubt. Whether it’s withholding affection, constantly moving the goalposts, or weaponizing silence, these patterns are designed to trigger intermittent reinforcement and keep you walking on eggshells. Once you realize their cruelty isn’t a reaction to your flaws, but a calculated mechanism to maintain control, the psychological fog finally starts to clear.
The “psychological fog” doesn’t clear just because you’re aware that you’re being manipulated.
@Rabbitinthepinkhat You are 100% right—and that is the hardest part of recovery. Intellectual awareness happens in the prefrontal cortex, but the “trauma bond” lives deep in the limbic system and nervous system. Because intermittent reinforcement hijacks the brain’s dopamine and cortisol pathways like a chemical addiction, your logical mind can clearly see the manipulation while your body still feels trapped in the fog. Awareness is just the first spark; clearing the fog completely requires physical distance and nervous system regulation.
@ThePsycheProtocolYTWell said.
That happened to me. Once I learned about narcissism, I left my husband that year.
@DeniseD5703 That takes immense courage. Breaking through the cognitive dissonance is hard enough, but having the strength to actually walk away and reclaim your peace is the ultimate breakthrough. Wishing you continued healing and freedom!
This is exactly my relationship. Wow its horrible you cant say how you feel because its never taken the right way. Its so awful. Its horrible
Please get out of it for yourself.
My question is she claims that’s I am doing these things. She claims that I am the narcissist and sad thing is, I see behaviors I don’t like and I can’t stand to be controlled but I am trying to just be me.
When he said All his friends agree I’m crazy…. Internally I laughed cause knew he had zero friends…..
I have been called that by a psychopath, including abnormal, and the covert narcissist wife chuckled. Yes, a woman, a trad wife, CHUCKLED as she witnessed her husband/master abusing her female neighbor. Yes, a grandmother, whose 4 children are all adults, chuckled. As a DV advocate/therapist, who is well aware that trad wives make up the majority of demographic of DV women, CHUCKLED. Yes, trad wife, high school drop out, chuckled at a professional female neighbor being abused by her master. Diabolical.
You should have laughed out loud.
Mine said all of his friends said he is not a narcissist. I replied with, they should marry you and they’ll find out. 😂😂😅💪🏾
@still_healing_survivorgreat answer
These people are 2 people one on the outside infront of others and the other in there homes. Omg the mask comes off when they come home. Let me tell you. This is awful. People dont even believe you when you try to tell them. Its horrible
The post separation abuse never ends when you try to coparent with these miserable people..the best you can get is counter parenting with zero expectations…radical acceptance has been the key 🔑 to my sanity ❤
15 yrs, 2 kids and then discarded. Co parenting with this person is still a nightmare even tho he left!!! Always has to poke and poke at me. I don’t think it will ever change.
Now that I think back on my life with that person, it was so sick. The control, the evil, sleep deprivation, cruelty, constant threats and pain in more ways than one, AT THE SAME TIME. ❤️🩹😭🙏 Beyond evil…
They are evil and cruel. I just regret to realize too late. In my situation is family members. An awful situation.
OMG!! This is soo true!! I NEVER HAD FRIENDS OVER BECAUSE THEY DID NOT CARE FOR MY HUSBAND!! My entire personality changed. It was unbelievable! I DID NOT know this was happening to me until I finally left after 17 years!
The vindictiveness is surprising because if you get out, that wasn’t supposed to happen.
They will retaliate.
The narcissist will run their smear campaign and rouse the Flying Monkeys for retaliation. If the scapegoat returns to the narcissist’s control, there will be all the normal narcissistic behaviours plus extra punishment for getting away from them.
This is so accurate! It’s literally what “walking on eggshells” means. You can never be truly carefree or impulsive, you’re constantly overthinking and worrying about their reaction. They put you in this perpetual state of confusion without even saying anything. This happens over years and years and can be pretty tricky to break out of.
Yes.
When you stop talking like yourself and at some point when you open up finally, and they tell that you either changed or that you lied to them and were fake for years…even though you tried to communicate….
Narcissism is insidious
If you do try to discuss things with narcissist, they have a way of twisting it or later you hear a totally different version from the event that occurred.
The saddest thing about narcisistic abuse is that it’s needless, makes no sense, occurs for no reason, and can permanently damage the victim’s sense of identity, self-worth, and ability to trust in others. I don’t have any mental- healthcare credentials, to be clear. However, I could write ten books about how it feels to be a victim of such abuse; and how difficult it can be to recover from. Victims of narcissistic abuse will often suffer for years, even long after the abusive relationship has ended. This kind of abuse has one sole purpose, which is to feed the narcissist’s need to feel; superior, dominant, and omnipotent by draining the victim of their mental, emotional, and often financial stability. Narcissistic abuse is not just about someone “temporarily losing it” after a bad day. It’s not about stress or even dishonesty, falling out of love or cheating etc. Although narcisists may engage in such behaviors; not every cheating, dishonest, or even self-absorbed person is a narcissist. Not all batterers are necessarily narcissists ( although many probably are). Narcissism is like the worst possible behaviors towards others, multiplied by at least 10; then added to that is the narcissist’s inability to feel conpassion or empathy for others. Narcissistic Abuse is a calculated means of controlling someone else’s behaviors and thought processes via extreme mental, and emotional bullying and outright emotional blackmail; commonly (but not alway) accompanied by physical abuse. Narcissists will tell you the sky is red. If you disagree and say the sky is actually blue, they’ll tell you you’re crazy, stupid, and incapable of distinguishing different colors. When you go outside and point to the sky and say, “ The color of the sky is clearly blue”, the narcissist will respond with, “ Of course it is, that’s what I’ve been saying all along!” Do you see how insane this is? It would be quite hilarious if it weren’t for the fact that the entire purpose of an argument such as the one above, is to cause the victim to start questioning his or her own sanity. If the victim of such abuse doesn’t recognize what’s going on, they will slowly begin questioning their own judgement and sanity. These techniques are also frequently used with gaslighting. Gaslighting is the act if purposefully confusing someone through circular, unending arguments; or may occur by moving or removing a victim’s objects such as keys, phone, other items- all in an effort to trick the person into thinking they’re going crazy. An example: “Where is my wallet? I know I put it in my purse last night. Now I don’t have my checkbook, cash, etc. I must be losing it!” Most people can’t imagine why someone would purposely cause such confusion and chaos for someone else, therefore never suspect the narcissist unless they’re caught. Even then, the narcissist will likely deny any accusations… The narcissist’s main goals- is to reap havok, chaos, and dysfunction into an otherwise mostly normal person’s life. What’s more, the perpetrator will purposefully cause the victim into a reaction, then use that reaction to gain support from their”flying monkeys”. These agents of narcissists are carefully picked, so that the narcissist’s view cannot be debated by an objective observer. This triangulation also causes the victim to further doubt or dismiss their own thoughts and feelings. Narcissistic abuse is complete and total psychological warfare against another human being. The targeted person can be the NPD’s children, but is often the NPD’s spouse or significant other. Children of narcissists are also more likely to become narcissists themselves due to genetic and environmental factors. Or, they may have BPD or BPD tendencies. That’s not to say that ALL children of NPD’s have personality or mental-health disorders. Targets of those with NPD are usually very generous, often sensitive, and friendly people that have their lives at least somewhat together. NPD’S choose these kinds of people for a reason, because the reality is NPD’s are empty human beings full of self-hatred. They are inwardly chaotic, and this chaos often translates into either an extremely neat and tidy exterior facade or may manifest into complete disorder and mess. I don’t sympathize with those with NPD because they aren’t psychotic- they do know the difference between right and wrong. They just choose to do wrong, choose to purposely hurt others because it boosts their often very tiny, fragile egos. These are dangerous people, and the only difference between most of them and a common murderer is that they haven’t physically murdered anyone yet. Well, most of time. Additionally, when dealing with a narcissist, the secrecy, emotional distance, and constant excuses can leave you questioning your partner’s faithfulness.
